In order to be grandparented as a Fellow of the American Board of Psychoanalysis an analyst must meet one of the following criteria:
- Analysts certified by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association prior to December 31, 2015.
- Analysts certified by ABPP or BCD-P prior to December 31, 2015 and who are graduates of APsaA, ACPEinc or IPA Institutes.
- Analysts certified prior to December 31, 2015 by ABPP or BCD-P who are graduates of psychoanalytic institutes not approved by APSaA, IPA or ACPEinc, but who can document training that is equivalent to AAPE, ACPEinc, or IPA training standards which includes both training analysis and control analyses conducted on an individual basis at a frequency of three to five times a week.
- Analysts who graduated from psychoanalytic institutes not approved by APsaA, IPA, or ACPEinc but who can document training that is equivalent to AAPE, ACPEinc, or IPA standards which includes both training analysis and control analyses conducted on an individual basis at a frequency of three to five times a week and who have had no prior opportunity for certification in their respective discipline, and have been appointed a training analyst by their institute.
Grandparenting applications will be accepted until December 31, 2017
Applicants must complete an application form and provide information including date of certification, training institute, date of birth, address, proof of licensure and attestation to good ethical standing. The ABPsa will verify licensure and the certification and a certificate will be issued. If you are ABPP certified, please send to the ABPsa a copy of your certificate or letter from ABPP showing your initial and expiration dates. The initial grandparenting fee is $150 to cover the cost of the verification process, data entry and issuance of a certificate. In subsequent years the annual renewal fee is $150.
ABPsa will not be subsidized by any organization. The commitment is to assure its independence therefore its financial well being depends entirely on fees from applications for certification, annual registry renewal fees, donations and grants.
Fellows listed on the Registry of Fellows of the ABP have the opportunity to create an individual profile and establish a web presence through the ABPsa web site.
To be eligible for grandparenting an analyst must be certified on or before December 31, 2015 and applications will be accepted until December 31, 2017.
