I am a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst with the MInnesota Psychoanalytic Institute and in Private Practice. I have been President of the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and the Executive Director of the MPSI Psychotherapy Center, which I also founded. My clinical orientation draws on all the theoretical schools to understand unconscious processes, resistance, and transference/countertransference and I have developed an approach that sees the patient as an active participant in an interpersonal process that has growth and autonomy at its core. The MPSI Psychotherapy Center provides low fee psychodynamic psychotherapy to patients without the means to access this kind of care. Because we have forged strong connections to Graduate Psychology and Social Work programs in our area, we are able to staff the Center with Interns who have a passionate desire to learn more about psychodynamic psychotherapy and to work with the marginalized and poor. Interns receive the first year of our Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program as part of their placement. Because we offer 2 hours of group supervision and two ours of individual supervision a week in addition to the training and because Interns work intensively with a small number of patients, often twice a week, we are a highly desired placement site and get many more applicants than the 6 spots we have available. WE work with no government agencies or insurance programs so that all clinical decisions are made between patient and therapist without outside interference. Each year some of our interns apply for a second year of training that allows them to complete the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program and to continue working with patients that began to see in their first year placement. It is not unusual for interns to seek admission to our Institute as a next step in their development.
